About the Fidyah Donation: Pay Your Fasting Fidyah from Austria
A Fidyah donation means that a person who cannot fast because of old age or an illness with no hope of recovery feeds a poor person for each day of fasting missed.
At Austria Yetim Eli, the Fidyah is 15 € per day.
Who is required to pay fasting Fidyah?
The Qur'an states that those who are unable to fast shall, as Fidyah, feed a poor person (al-Baqarah 2:184).
- Pays Fidyah: someone who cannot fast due to old age, or a chronically ill person with no hope of recovery.
- Makes up the fast instead of Fidyah: someone with a temporary excuse such as temporary illness, travel, pregnancy or breastfeeding — they make up the fasts once the excuse ends.
Fidyah does not replace a fast that can be made up. Consult a religious scholar about your own situation; details in our article What is Fidyah?.
Calculating Fidyah: how many days, how much?
| Number of days | Total Fidyah |
|---|---|
| 1 day | 15 € |
| 2 days | 30 € |
| 5 days | 75 € |
| 30 days (all of Ramadan) | 450 € |
Example: For a person living in Salzburg who, for health reasons, cannot fast any of the 30 days of Ramadan, the Fidyah comes to 30 × 15 € = 450 €.
Fidyah can be given during or after Ramadan, either in one payment or day by day.
Fidyah, making up (Qada) and Kaffarah: which applies to you?
Not everyone who cannot fast in Ramadan is subject to the same ruling. In short:
- Making up (Qada): fasting later, day by day, the fasts missed due to a temporary excuse.
- Fidyah: a person who will never be able to fast feeds a poor person for each day.
- Kaffarah: the expiation for deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast without a valid excuse; it must not be confused with Fidyah.
If a person who has paid Fidyah later becomes able to fast, they must make up the days they missed.

Fidyah for your elderly parents
Many families in Austria prefer that the children pay the Fidyah on behalf of an elderly mother or father who cannot fast.
In this case, it is appropriate to make the payment with the permission and knowledge of the person on whose behalf it is given.
