Zakat in Austria: Calculation, Proxy and Giving Zakat Online
For Muslims in Austria who want to donate Zakat, the real question is usually “how much?” and “how?”.
In this section we briefly explain how to calculate Zakat in euros, how to deliver it from Austria and how the proxy (wakalah) works.
How is Zakat calculated in Austria?
According to Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs), the Nisab is wealth worth 80,18 grams of gold.
If one lunar year has passed on wealth that reaches this value, excluding your basic needs and debts, Zakat is applied at a rate of 2,5% (one fortieth).
- Included: cash, bank accounts (Sparbuch, Girokonto), gold, foreign currency, trade goods, receivables.
- Excluded: the home you live in, the car you use, household goods, debts that are due.
Example: If a gram of gold costs ~120 €, the Nisab is about 80,18 × 120 = 9.622 €.
If you have 20.000 € in savings after deducting your debts, your Zakat comes to 20.000 × 0,025 = 500 €.
As the price of gold changes every day, calculate with the price on the day of payment. For detailed euro examples, see our guide to calculating Zakat in Austria.

Common mistakes when giving Zakat
- Calculating on the gross amount: don't forget to deduct debts that are due (e.g. this month's loan instalment, unpaid bills).
- Forgetting gold: investment gold and quarter gold coins (other than jewellery) are also included; for differing views on jewellery, consult a religious scholar.
- Not keeping track of the year: note the Hijri date on which you first reached the Nisab; your Zakat year is complete on that date.
- Not stating the intention: Zakat must be given with the intention of Zakat. A donation made on this page is recorded as Zakat.
Example scenario: Someone living in Innsbruck has 12.000 € in a Sparbuch, 50 grams of investment gold at home (~120 €/gram → 6.000 €) and 2.000 € of debts that are due.
The amount subject to Zakat is 12.000 + 6.000 − 2.000 = 16.000 €; the Zakat comes to 16.000 × 0,025 = 400 €.
