Donating Qurbani from Austria is the most practical way to fulfil your act of worship without searching for a butcher on the morning of Eid.
Eid al-Adha 2027 is on 16–19 May. In this guide we have brought together the dates, regional prices, the process of sacrifice by proxy and the last day to donate in one place.

- Eid al-Adha 2027: Day of Arafah 15 May (Saturday), Eid 16–19 May 2027 (Diyanet calendar).
- Qurbani is a financial act of worship; according to Diyanet, it can be performed by proxy and abroad.
- Small-animal Qurbani starts from €100 (Africa); Türkiye €250, Palestine €250.
- The video of the sacrifice is sent to you: via WhatsApp for Türkiye and via SMS for other regions.
- We recommend completing your Wajib Qurbani donation a few days before Eid at the latest.
What is Qurbani, and who is it obligatory for?
Qurbani means sacrificing an animal that meets certain conditions, on specific days and with the intention of worship, in order to draw closer to Allah and earn His pleasure.
The Qur'an says: “For every community We have appointed… a rite of sacrifice” (al-Hajj, 22/34).
According to Diyanet, in the Hanafi school Qurbani is wajib (obligatory) for every sane, adult Muslim who is resident (not travelling) and owns wealth worth 80,18 grams of gold beyond their debts and basic needs.
Unlike Zakat, the wealth does not need to have been held for a full year. For detailed conditions and examples in euros, read our article who is Qurbani obligatory for.
When is Eid al-Adha 2027?
According to the calendar of Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs), the Day of Arafah is Saturday 15 May 2027.
Eid al-Adha begins on Sunday 16 May and ends on Wednesday 19 May 2027.
| Day | Date | Note |

Why is it difficult to perform Qurbani in Austria?
In Austria, animal slaughter is subject to rules on animal welfare, hygiene and food safety.
The rules are detailed and their application can differ from one federal state to another. For definitive information, you should consult your municipality or the competent authorities.
In practice, most families face the following problems:
- Finding a suitable place: slaughter at home, in the garden or in front of an apartment building is generally not possible.
- Capacity: licensed places that perform slaughter during Eid are limited; appointments fill up quickly.
- Time: the days of Eid are often working days; in May 2027, three days of Eid fall on weekdays.
- Distribution: getting Qurbani meat to people who are genuinely in need is not as easy in Austria as in poor regions.
This is why many Muslims living in Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz, Graz and Vorarlberg prefer to have their Qurbani performed abroad by proxy.
Is Qurbani abroad by proxy permissible?
Yes. Diyanet's High Council of Religious Affairs clearly states that Qurbani is a financial act of worship and can be performed by proxy.
According to the Council, there is nothing wrong with the Qurbani being performed in another city or abroad; whether the price in the country of sacrifice is lower or higher does not change this ruling.
The proxy can be given verbally, in writing, by phone or over the internet. So stating on the online donation form on whose behalf the Qurbani is to be performed counts as giving a proxy.
Diyanet also points out that if there are people in need where you live, it is more appropriate to sacrifice and distribute the Qurbani there. You should make this choice according to your own situation.
We explain the conditions and the intention (niyyah) in detail in our guide to Qurbani by proxy.

Which region should I choose?
Religiously, all regions are of equal value; the choice depends on your priorities.
- If budget is the priority: Africa means more Qurbani for the same budget.
- If urgent humanitarian need is the priority: Palestine, Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan stand out.
- If your connection to your homeland matters: sacrifice in Türkiye; the video arrives via WhatsApp.
Small animal or large animal?
A small animal (sheep, goat) is sacrificed on behalf of one person only.
A large animal (cattle), on the other hand, can be shared by up to seven people. According to Diyanet, each shareholder must own at least one seventh, and all must have the intention of worship.
Large animals are suitable for extended families, mosque congregations or groups of friends who want to offer Qurbani together.
For one person's Wajib Qurbani, however, a small animal is the most practical option.
Which type of Qurbani should I choose?
There are six types on the donation form: Wajib (Eid al-Adha), Nadhr (vow), Aqiqah, Sadaqah, Shifa (healing) and Shukr (thanksgiving) Qurbani.
- For your annual Qurbani at Eid, choose Wajib.
- If you have vowed to offer a Qurbani on a condition, choose Nadhr; neither you nor your relatives may eat its meat.
- For your newborn child, choose Aqiqah.
- If you have received a blessing, choose Shukr; if you are wishing a sick person recovery, choose Shifa; with a general charitable intention, choose Sadaqah Qurbani.
For the differences and rulings, see our guide to Aqiqah, Nadhr and Shukr Qurbani.
Choose the region, state on whose behalf it is to be performed, and leave the rest to us. The video of the sacrifice comes to your phone.

On whose behalf is Qurbani performed?
According to the Hanafi school, Qurbani is obligatory individually for every adult Muslim who owns wealth at the Nisab threshold.
So if both spouses are considered wealthy in religious terms, a separate Qurbani is required for each of them. Details in our article who is Qurbani obligatory for.
Example scenario: a family of four in Linz
Suppose that in a family living in Linz, the mother and the father each have savings at the Nisab threshold beyond their debts and basic needs.
The family wants to have their Qurbani performed in Africa:
- 1 Wajib Qurbani on behalf of the mother: 100 €
- 1 Wajib Qurbani on behalf of the father: 100 €
- Total: 2 × €100 = €200
On the form, they answer “no” to the question “Are they all for the same person?” and enter the two names separately.
Example scenario: from Graz to Türkiye and Palestine
Someone living in Graz wants their Wajib Qurbani performed in Türkiye and an additional Sadaqah Qurbani in Palestine.
- Türkiye Wajib Qurbani: €250 (video via WhatsApp)
- Palestine Sadaqah Qurbani: €250 (meat delivered canned/frozen)
- Total: €625 — a single payment with the basket system
Example scenario: from Innsbruck on behalf of three generations
Someone living in Innsbruck wants to donate their own Wajib Qurbani, a Qurbani on behalf of their retired mother and an Aqiqah for their newborn grandchild, all at the same time.
- Wajib Qurbani on their own behalf, Afghanistan: 150 €
- Wajib Qurbani on behalf of their mother (with her permission), Afghanistan: 150 €
- Aqiqah for the grandchild, Asia: 150 €
- Total: €450 — each Qurbani on a separate line with its own type and name
Example scenario: Qurbani and Eid clothes from Salzburg
Someone living in Salzburg wants their Wajib Qurbani performed in Yemen and to buy Eid clothes for an orphan.
- Yemen Qurbani: 150 €
- Clothing an orphan: shoes €15 + trousers €15 + top €10 = 40 €
- Total: €190, one basket and one payment
By when should the Qurbani donation be made?
For the Wajib Qurbani to be performed during the days of Eid, the animals must be obtained in advance and the names passed on to the sacrifice teams.
That is why we recommend not leaving it until the last day. If possible, complete your donation in the first weeks of May, and at the latest a few days before Eid.
We will announce the exact closing date on the project pages as Eid approaches. If you are unsure, contact us.

How is Qurbani meat distributed?
The Prophet (pbuh) recommended dividing Qurbani meat into three: one part for the poor, one for relatives and neighbours, and one for the household (Abu Dawud, Dahaya, 10).
Diyanet states that in times when many people are in need, it is more appropriate for those who are well off to distribute most or even all of the meat.
For Qurbani performed by proxy, the meat is distributed to families in need, orphans and elderly people in the region where the sacrifice takes place.
In rural areas of Africa, Yemen or Afghanistan, the meat received at Eid is, for many families, a food that rarely reaches their table during the year.
In Palestine, due to the conditions, the meat is delivered canned or frozen, which allows distribution to continue after Eid as well.
Diyanet states that the skin or meat of the Qurbani must not be given as payment for the slaughter, and that the meat should be distributed primarily to people in need rather than sold.
How to choose a trustworthy organisation for your Qurbani donation
With Qurbani by proxy, you entrust your Qurbani to someone else in a place you cannot see. So when choosing an organisation, look at the following:
- Clear identity: are the organisation's name, address, phone number and association details clearly stated?
- Clear prices: are regional prices stated clearly and in advance?
- Proof: is there a video of the sacrifice or similar confirmation?
- Receipt: do you receive written confirmation after your payment?
- Religious care: are you asked about the type of Qurbani and on whose behalf it will be performed?
Austria Yetim Eli is an association founded in Innsbruck in 2026 and governed by Austrian association law. Its founding team consists of volunteers who previously gained field experience with various humanitarian aid organisations.
