How much is Fitrah? This is the first question many families in Austria ask in the last days of Ramadan.
In this guide you will find, step by step, what Fitrah is, the status of the 2027 amount, who has to give it and how to calculate the total for your family.

- Fitrah (Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a financial act of worship given by a Muslim who reaches Eid al-Fitr and owns wealth amounting to the Nisab, for themselves and the people they are responsible for supporting.
- The minimum Fitrah announced by the Diyanet for Europe in 2026 is 15 € per person; at Austria Yetim Eli, Fitrah is accepted at 15 €.
- The 2027 Fitrah amount has not yet been announced; the 2026 amount is valid until the start of Ramadan 2027 (8 February 2027).
- Fitrah should reach those in need before the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the latest (Eid on 9 March 2027); giving it during Ramadan is best.
What is Fitrah?
Fitrah comes from the Arabic root “fitr” (breaking the fast, creation) and is also known as Sadaqat al-Fitr.
It is a financial act of worship given in gratitude for completing the Ramadan fast and, according to the Hanafi school, is wajib (obligatory).
In the words of the High Council of Religious Affairs of the Diyanet (Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs), Fitrah enables those in need to share in the joy of Eid and ensures that Eid is celebrated together by all sections of society.
According to a narration from Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra), the Prophet (pbuh) made Fitrah obligatory to purify the fasting person from idle and indecent talk and to provide food for the poor (Abu Dawud, Zakat 17).
How much is Fitrah? 2026 and 2027 Fitrah amount in Austria
At the time of the Prophet, Fitrah was measured in wheat, barley, dates or raisins.
Today this measure is expressed in money based on one person's daily food needs.
2026 Fitrah amount in Europe: 15 €
For Muslims living in Europe, the Diyanet announced in 2026 a minimum Fitrah amount of 15 € per person.
The amount set by decision of the High Council of Religious Affairs is valid from the start of Ramadan 2026 until the start of Ramadan 2027.
The same decision also states that this amount is the daily fasting Fidyah.
Fitrah 2027 in Austria: has the amount been announced?
The honest answer: No, not yet.
The High Council of Religious Affairs usually announces the Fitrah amount at the beginning of the year, a few weeks before Ramadan (the 2026 decision is dated 7 January 2026).
We will update this article once the 2027 amount is announced. Until then, the reference amount is 15 €.
The minimum amount and more
15 € is a lower limit. According to the Council's decision, anyone obliged to pay may give a higher amount as Fitrah, taking their own daily food spending into account.
As the cost of living and food in Austria is high, those who can afford it may confidently increase their Fitrah.
Who gives Fitrah?
According to the Hanafi school, Fitrah is wajib for a Muslim who meets the following conditions:
- Being Muslim and free,
- Owning wealth amounting to the Nisab (the same as the Zakat Nisab, the value of 80,18 grams of gold) beyond basic needs and debts.
Unlike Zakat, for Fitrah there is no requirement that a year has passed over the wealth, nor does the wealth need to be growing (productive).
We explain how to calculate the Nisab with euro examples in our guide to calculating Zakat in Austria.
On whose behalf is Fitrah given?
- For yourself,
- For your children who have not reached puberty and whom you are responsible for supporting (including a baby born before the morning of Eid),
- For adult children with a mental disability in your care.
Your spouse and adult children are responsible for their own Fitrah; however, if you pay with their permission, it is valid. In practice, families usually pay for the whole household in one go.
When is Fitrah given? 2027 deadline
Fitrah becomes obligatory at dawn on the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
However, so that those in need can prepare for Eid, giving it during the month of Ramadan is permissible and more beneficial.
According to a narration from Abdullah ibn Umar (ra), the Prophet commanded that Fitrah be given before going out to the Eid prayer (Bukhari, Zakat 76; Muslim, Zakat 22).
| Date (2027) | What it means for Fitrah |
|---|---|
| 8 February 2027 | Ramadan begins; Fitrah can be given |
| First week of March 2027 | Recommended final period for it to reach distant regions on time |
| 9 March 2027 (morning) | Day 1 of Eid al-Fitr; Fitrah becomes obligatory and should be paid before the Eid prayer |
| After Eid | Fitrah does not lapse but remains a debt; it should be paid as soon as possible |
Distribution takes time for Fitrah sent from Austria abroad. We therefore recommend that you give your Fitrah in the first half of Ramadan.
With 15 € per person, share in the Eid meal of a person in need. For more than one person, simply increase the quantity.

The calculation is simple: number of people × Fitrah amount. The examples below are based on the minimum amount of 15 €.
| Example scenario | People | Total Fitrah |
|---|---|---|
| Single, one person | 1 | 15 € |
| Married couple (for both, with the spouse's permission) | 2 | 30 € |
| Mother, father and 2 young children | 4 | 60 € |
| Mother, father and 4 young children | 6 | 90 € |
Example: a family of four in Linz
Mr Ahmet and his wife live in Linz; they have two children aged 8 and 12.
- Mr Ahmet's savings, beyond his basic needs and debts, are above the Nisab → Fitrah is wajib.
- Fitrah for himself and his two young children: 3 × 15 € = 45 €.
- With his wife's permission he also pays her Fitrah: + 15 € = 60 €.
- If he decides to give 20 € per person because his daily food spending is higher, the total comes to 80 €.
To pay this amount in one go on our website, simply set the quantity to 4 on the Fitrah page.
Who can receive Fitrah?
Fitrah is given to those who can receive Zakat. At the top of the categories listed in verse 60 of Surah at-Tawbah are the poor and the needy.
For a detailed list, see our article “Who can receive Zakat?”.
Who cannot receive Fitrah?
- Mother, father and grandparents (ascendants),
- Children and grandchildren (descendants),
- One's spouse,
- Wealthy people who own wealth amounting to the Nisab.
Fitrah can be given to siblings, uncles, aunts and their children if they are in need; giving to relatives also strengthens family ties (sila-i rahim).
Is Fitrah given in cash or as food?
According to the High Council of Religious Affairs, Fitrah may be given in cash or in kind, such as food.
For Fitrah given from Austria, cash is the practical option. Fitrah received by Austria Yetim Eli reaches families in need in the regions where we work as food or cash support.

The difference between Fitrah, Fidyah and Zakat

| Amount | 15 € per person (minimum) | 15 € for each missed day | 2,5% of wealth |
| When | Before the Eid prayer | During or after Ramadan | When the year is complete |
For those who cannot fast, read our guide to fasting Fidyah; for the basic principles of Zakat, read our article “What is Zakat?”.
Common mistakes when giving Fitrah
Fitrah may look like a simple act of worship, but some points are often overlooked:
- Forgetting young children: the head of the household pays a separate Fitrah for each child who has not reached puberty. A baby born before the morning of Eid is included too.
- Leaving it to the last day: Fitrah given on the morning of Eid is valid, but it becomes difficult for it to reach a family abroad before Eid.
- Confusing Fitrah with Zakat: having paid Zakat does not cancel Fitrah. They are two separate acts of worship.
- Giving to close relatives: Fitrah given to parents, children or one's spouse does not count as Fitrah.
- Thinking the minimum is a maximum: 15 € is a lower limit; those who can afford it may give more.
Why is Fitrah sent to people in need abroad?
In principle, Fitrah should primarily be given to people in need where you live.
However, in Austria it is not always easy to reach someone eligible to receive Fitrah. By contrast, in regions suffering from war, drought or poverty, one person's daily food needs are a far greater need.
Scholars of Islamic jurisprudence have considered it permissible to send Fitrah to places where the need is more severe, or to relatives in need.
For this reason, many Muslims in Austria prefer to send their Fitrah to families abroad through a trustworthy organisation.
