Before Giving Zakat Online: Do You Know Your Amount?
Zakat is given when your savings exceed the Nisab (the value of 80,18 grams of gold) and a lunar year has passed over them, at a rate of 2,5% of the savings.
If you haven't calculated your amount yet, first take a look at the guide calculating Zakat in euros in Austria. It only takes a few minutes.
If you would like to refresh your knowledge of the conditions and ruling of Zakat, our article What is Zakat? is an ideal starting point.
How to Give Zakat Online: Step by Step
Step 1: Open the Zakat donation page
Start from the donation projects in the main menu or go directly to the Zakat donation page.
It is important to choose Zakat as a separate project, so that your donation is recorded as Zakat.
Step 2: Choose or enter the amount
You can choose one of the preset amounts (€20, €50, €100, €200 or €500) or enter the amount you calculated yourself.
Then click the “Add to basket” button.
Step 3: Check your basket
The basket lets you complete several donations in one payment.
For example, alongside your Zakat you can add the Fitrah donation in Ramadan (€15 per person) or, voluntarily, a monthly orphan sponsorship (€50 / month).
Step 4: Enter your details
- Full name and mobile number are required.
- Email is optional, but since the thank-you message and receipt are sent by email, we strongly recommend entering it.
- If you like, you can add a short note (e.g. “Zakat – 1448”).
Step 5: Choose a payment method and pay
There are two options:
- Card / Online: Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Austrian online banking via EPS. Payment is completed on Stripe's secure payment page.
- PayPal: you are redirected to your PayPal account and confirm there.
When payment is complete, you return to our website and see the thank-you page. Once the payment is confirmed, your receipt arrives by email.
Five steps, a few minutes. May your Zakat reach families in need through your proxy.
Donate ZakatLet Me Calculate FirstExample Scenario: Zakat and Fitrah from Innsbruck in One Basket
Example scenario: a family of four living in Innsbruck wants to give both their Zakat and their Fitrah during Ramadan.
| Basket item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Zakat | €14.000 net savings × 0,025 | 350 € |
| Fitrah | 4 persons × €15 | 60 € |
| Total | 410 € |
The family first enters €350 on the Zakat page and adds it to the basket, then adds Fitrah from the Fitrah page and sets the quantity to 4.
Two items appear in the basket; the transaction is completed with a single EPS payment and the receipt arrives by email.
Because Zakat and Fitrah are different acts of worship, it is important that they appear as separate items in the basket.
Giving Zakat from Your Phone
Our website is mobile-friendly; you can give your Zakat from your phone without switching on a computer.
- If you use an iPhone you can pay with Apple Pay, and on Android with Google Pay, without entering card details.
- If you use your Austrian bank's app, you can pay with EPS directly via bank approval.
- If the PayPal app is installed, the confirmation screen may open in the app.
What Happens After Payment?
- Thank-you page: when payment is complete, you return to the website and see your donation reference number.
- Thank-you email: arrives shortly afterwards if you entered your email address.
- Receipt: once the payment provider confirms the payment, your donation is marked “Paid” and the receipt is sent to your email.
- Delivery: your Zakat is delivered to those in need in accordance with your proxy.
If you have any questions, you can write to us via WhatsApp or email quoting your reference number.
Is Online Zakat Safe? What You Can Rely On
When giving Zakat online, you want to know two things: is my payment safe, and is my Zakat going to the right place?
Payment security
- You enter your card details not on our website but directly on Stripe's or PayPal's secure payment page.
- The connection is encrypted (HTTPS).
- On the Stripe payment page, the recipient account name shown is “Orphans Help - Austria Yetim Eli”.
- Once the payment provider has confirmed your donation, it is marked “Paid” and the receipt is sent.
Transparency of the organisation
- Austria Yetim Eli is an association registered in Innsbruck (Salurnerstraße 1, 6020 Innsbruck).
- This is openly set out on our Who we are, our board and countries we work in pages.
- For questions, you can reach us by phone/WhatsApp on +43 676 520 35 35 and at info@austriayetimeli.at; there is also our contact page.
For the questions to ask when evaluating any organisation, see our article how to choose a trustworthy charity.
Proxy and Intention in Online Zakat
According to the High Council of Religious Affairs, Zakat can be given directly to the person entitled to it or delivered through an intermediary (proxy); it makes no difference whether the intermediary is an individual or an organisation.
When you choose the Zakat project and pay, you appoint us as your proxy to deliver your Zakat to those in need.
You don't need to say any special phrase for the intention (niyyah). It is enough to intend in your heart while paying: “This donation is my obligatory Zakat”.
To learn in detail who Zakat can be given to, read our article who can receive Zakat.
Zakat or Sadaqah? Choose the Right Project
The most common confusion when donating online is the difference between Zakat and voluntary donations.
- Zakat: it is obligatory (fard), determined by a specific calculation and given only to people in need. For this, choose the Zakat project.
- Sadaqah: it is voluntary and the amount is up to you. It can be given through projects such as Sadaqah donation or food parcel.
- Sadaqah Jariyah: good deeds with a lasting effect; water wells and lasting works belong to this group.
Once you have completed your Zakat, you can also contribute to these projects with peace of mind.
If You Would Like to Give Zakat by Bank Transfer
If you prefer a bank transfer to online payment, you can use our bank account details.
Write “Zakat” and your name in the payment reference, so that your donation is recorded under the right project.
Common Mistakes When Giving Zakat Online
- Not entering an email: the receipt cannot be sent. If you want a receipt, add your email.
- Giving Zakat to another project: donating to a water well or mosque project with the thought “let this be my Zakat” does not count as Zakat. For Zakat, choose the Zakat project.
- An estimated amount without calculating: Zakat given short remains a debt. Do the calculation first, and if in doubt, round the amount up a little.
- Giving “Zakat” on behalf of parents or a spouse: Zakat is not given directly to them; but you can pay their own Zakat with their permission.
- Leaving it to the last day: it gets busy at the end of Ramadan or on the eve of Eid. Give your Zakat without delay once your Zakat year is complete.
When Should I Give Zakat?
The time for Zakat is the day your Zakat year is complete; it does not have to be Ramadan.
Still, many people prefer the blessings of Ramadan. In 2027, Ramadan begins on 8 February 2027, and Eid al-Fitr is on 9–11 March 2027. Fitrah, however, must be delivered before the Eid prayer.
For all the donations you can make in Ramadan, see our Ramadan 2027 donation guide.
Whether you are in Vienna, Graz, Linz or Innsbruck makes no difference; the whole process is online. City guides: Zakat and Qurbani donations from Vienna · Zakat from Innsbruck and Tyrol.
