Austria Yetim Eli Editorial Team 6 min read

Orphan sponsorship is the most direct way to touch a child’s life with regular, predictable support.

In this article we explain how to sponsor an orphan from Austria for 50 € a month, the 6-month and yearly options, and complementary donations such as clothing an orphan and scholarships.

Orphan Sponsorship: Sponsor an Orphan from Austria for 50 € a Month — Orphans
In short
  • At Austria Yetim Eli, orphan sponsorship is 50 € a month; 300 € for 6 months, 600 € for a year.
  • Caring for orphans is an act of worship repeatedly emphasised in the Qur’an and, in the hadiths, given the glad tidings of being the Prophet’s neighbour in Paradise.
  • By clothing an orphan you can give a one-off gift of shoes, clothes, a school bag, a hot meal or a toy (10–15 €).
  • For educational support, a student scholarship in Africa starts from 25 € / month.
  • From Austria you can give by card, EPS, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or regular bank transfer.

What is orphan sponsorship?

Orphan sponsorship (commonly called adopting an orphan or orphan kinship) means supporting an orphan’s needs with regular donations over a certain period.

What sets it apart from one-off help is continuity. The family knows next month’s support will come and can plan accordingly.

The sponsorship donation is used for the basic needs of the orphan on the ground and of the family raising them.

Who is an orphan?

In Islamic law, an orphan is a child whose father has died and who has not yet reached puberty. A child who has lost both parents is also included (TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi, “Yetim”).

International aid organisations, however, usually count children who have lost one or both parents as “orphans” in their statistics.

Many of these children live with their surviving parent, grandparents or relatives. Sponsorship is often what allows this family to care for the child.

The virtue of caring for orphans: Qur’anic verses and hadiths

The word orphan and rulings concerning orphans appear in many verses of the Qur’an.

  • “So as for the orphan, do not oppress him.” (ad-Duha 93/9)
  • The one who denies the religion is described as the one who drives away the orphan (al-Ma’un 107/1–2).
  • The righteous are described as those who, despite their own love for it, feed the poor, the orphan and the captive (al-Insan 76/8).
  • “They ask you about orphans. Say: Improving their situation is best.” (al-Baqarah 2/220)

According to the narration of Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (pbuh) pointed to his index and middle fingers and said:

“I and the one who looks after an orphan will be like this in Paradise.” (Bukhari, Talaq 25; Adab 24)

A similar narration is also reported from Abu Hurayrah (Muslim, Zuhd 42).

Unjustly consuming an orphan’s wealth, on the other hand, is counted among the seven destructive major sins (Bukhari, Wasaya 23).

Note: For details on giving orphan sponsorship as Zakat or Sadaqah, please consult an imam or religious scholar. For a general overview, see our articles who can receive Zakat and what is Sadaqah.

How much does orphan sponsorship cost? Monthly, 6-month and yearly options

At Austria Yetim Eli, an orphan donation can be made in three ways:

OptionAmountWho is it for?
Monthly50 €Those who want to donate themselves every month
6 months300 €Those who want to plan half a year with a single payment
Yearly600 €Those who want to give a year’s support in one go

Example: 50 € / month comes to roughly 1,65 € a day. In other words, for less than the price of a coffee in Vienna you can share in an orphan’s month.

Example: A family in Graz sponsors three orphans on behalf of their three children: 3 × 600 € = 1.800 € / year.

The yearly option is practical for those who want to renew their donation every Ramadan. You can plan your Ramadan with our Ramadan 2027 donation guide.

Regular giving by standing order (Dauerauftrag)

In Austria, many people make regular payments through a Dauerauftrag (standing order) with their bank.

If you would like to give your monthly sponsorship this way, use our bank accounts and write “Orphan Sponsorship” and your name in the payment reference.

For bank transfer donations, it helps us match your donation to you if you let us know via the contact page or on WhatsApp (+43 676 520 35 35).

In addition to regular sponsorship, you can give an orphan clothes, shoes or a school bag directly.

At handover, photos showing the donor’s name are sent by SMS.

You can make your choice on the clothing an orphan donation page. For Eid clothes, also take a look at our clothing aid project.

Orphan sponsorship or clothing an orphan?

The two are not alternatives but complement each other.

  • Orphan sponsorship: regular support — monthly, for 6 months or yearly — for the family’s ongoing needs.
  • Clothing an orphan: a one-off, tangible gift; ideal for the start of school, winter or before Eid.

If your budget does not allow regular giving, you can start with clothing an orphan and move on to sponsorship later.

Scholarships and educational support

One of the things that most changes an orphan’s future is being able to stay in education.

You can find all education projects on the education donations page.

Why give regularly to orphans? How it differs from one-off help

A one-off donation meets a momentary need. A regular orphan donation, however, lets the family see ahead.

  • Predictability: the family can plan rent, food and school costs for the coming months.
  • Continuity in education: the risk of the child being taken out of school for financial reasons is reduced.
  • Convenience for donors: instead of thinking each month about what to give, you add a fixed line for doing good to your budget.

The expression “looking after an orphan” in the hadith also carries the meaning of continuity and commitment. Sponsorship is one of today’s forms of that commitment.

Orphan sponsorship as a family: teach your children to do good

For children growing up in Austria, it is not always easy to understand the lives of children their age in other countries.

Many families start the sponsorship together with their children, teaching them to share and to be grateful.

Example: A family in Salzburg sets aside a small amount from their children’s pocket money each month; the parents make up the rest, and the monthly 50 € sponsorship donation is made together.

Choosing a school bag (15 €) or a school supplies set (35 €) together with your children at the start of the school year also strengthens this awareness.

Bringing joy to orphans at Eid and in Ramadan

For a child who cannot wear new clothes on the morning of Eid, the lack felt most is Eid itself.

  • In Ramadan you can share the table of orphan families with an iftar meal (3,50 € / person).
  • Before Eid you can give Fitrah and, for Eid clothes, clothing aid (40 €).
  • At Eid al-Adha (16–19 May 2027), you can bring meat to the tables of families in need with the Qurbani you have slaughtered by proxy.

Combining orphan sponsorship with other good deeds

Many donors give their sponsorship together with other donations at Eid and on special days.

Thanks to the basket system, you can give to several projects in a single payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is orphan sponsorship per month?

At Austria Yetim Eli, orphan sponsorship costs 50 € a month. It can also be given in one payment: 300 € for 6 months or 600 € for a year.

Is “adopting an orphan” the same as orphan sponsorship?

In the language of giving, yes: “adopting an orphan” means supporting an orphan’s needs with regular donations. It is not adoption in the legal sense; the child stays with their family or with the people who care for them.

Can I stop the sponsorship at any time?

Online donations are payments for a set period; whether you renew your donation for the next period is up to you. If you give by standing order (Dauerauftrag), you can cancel it with your bank.

What is the reward for caring for an orphan?

The Prophet (pbuh) said that whoever protects and looks after an orphan will be as close to him in Paradise as two fingers (Bukhari, Talaq 25; Adab 24).

Can I give my orphan donation from my Zakat?

Whether Zakat can be given to an orphan depends on whether the child and their family are eligible to receive Zakat. To be sure, consult an imam or religious scholar; you can also give your Zakat directly as a Zakat donation.

Are photos sent when clothing an orphan?

Yes. For donations to clothe an orphan, photos showing the donor’s name are sent by SMS at the time of handover.
